
Fairbanks Arts is seeking an Arts Education Coordinator (AEC) to join our team. The position starts at $20/hr, ranges 30-40 hours per week, and reports to the Executive Director. All scheduling to be approved by Fairbanks Arts’ Operations Manager.
This position is responsible for the management of the organization’s arts education programs, working with other Fairbanks Arts staff as appropriate. The AEC will work in close partnership and collaboration with the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, local Teaching Artists, local arts organizations, and the Fairbanks community to help ensure coordination across the organization’s arts education initiatives and programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
The Arts Education Coordinator is responsible for administering all aspects of the Artist in Schools Program, FACE (Fairbanks Arts and Cultural Education) School Performances, the Up With Art annual student art exhibition (in partnership with FAA’s Visual Arts Coordinator), the Mayor’s student art show, and other arts education program activities and efforts. General duties along with brief descriptions of core areas of responsibility are noted below. Please note, while the list of responsibilities is representative it is not an exhaustive list of the role’s responsibilities.
General responsibilities
- Implement and improve upon existing procedures and systems that support arts education programs
- Plan, organize, and schedule meetings occurring in the office, offsite, and via video conference regarding arts education programs and committee work
- Maintain arts education calendars and email contact lists
- Coordinate appropriate staff and volunteer assistance for arts education programs and maintain oversight of coverage schedules
- Prepare communications such as emails, reports, and other correspondence to maintain appropriate program documentation
- Draft and edit content for various materials and platforms (website, brochures, guides, newsletters, etc.)
- Maintain arts education files, both electronic and physical
- Enter and gather data and materials for annual reports, grants, presentations, etc. as it pertains to arts education programs
- Write and prepare sponsorship and grant materials to procure financial support for arts education programs, in partnership with the Executive Director
- Write and prepare reporting materials for funders at the conclusion of program activities
- Support schools, artists, and community members with polite and informative communication to foster engagement and involvement with arts education programs
- Update and maintain arts education policies, procedures, and other documentation
- Coordinate photo documentation of arts education program activities and coordinate media releases, as appropriate
- Assist with arts education advocacy efforts through writing letters to legislators and possibly testifying at local school board meetings
- Monitor recordkeeping and communications regarding arts education finances (invoices, payments, etc.) in partnership with Fairbanks Arts’ Bookkeeper
Arts Education Committees
Fairbanks Arts relies on the partnership and guidance of community advisory committees to advance its mission for promoting the arts in Interior Alaska and providing quality programs and services to our multigenerational audiences. Arts education committees* are composed of Fairbanks Arts staff, arts organization representatives, artists, FNSBSD educators and administrators, and community members. The AEC will:
- Schedule meetings and communicate scheduling needs with committee members
- Prepare agendas, program reports, and minutes for arts education committees
- Communicate with existing and prospective committee members
- Assist with committee development and recruitment
- Attend committee meetings as a Fairbanks Arts representative
- Execute and report on committee-determined action items

Artists in Schools (AIS) Residencies
Fairbanks Arts pairs artists with schools for several weeks of artistic residency via the Artists in Schools (AIS) program within the FNSBSD. AIS residencies are active studies that span traditional and contemporary art forms including music, dance, Alaska Native arts, media and digital arts, visual arts, literary art, and drama. The AEC will:
- Recruit teaching artists and act as liaison between teaching artists, Fairbanks Arts, and schools
- Schedule and coordinate teaching artists trainings
- Schedule, coordinate, and supervise AIS residencies in keeping with standards of the Alaska State Council on the Arts
- Conduct site visits during residencies
- Oversee submission of program reports and compile data from residency final reports
School Performances
Fairbanks Arts’ School Performances program is offered in collaboration with local affiliate organizations and provides students the opportunity to attend quality, live performances. Fairbanks Arts conducts administration for school participation through the promotion and coordination of student attendance to performances by partner organizations. The AEC will:
- Schedule and coordinate FACE school performances with presenting organizations including (but not limited to): Fairbanks Concert Association, Fairbanks Symphony, Fairbanks Light Opera Theatre, Shakespeare Theatre, Fairbanks Drama Association, and Theatre UAF
- Coordinate with performance venue staff to ensure smooth performance day logistics
- Contact schools with performance opportunities and secure seat bookings
Student Art Exhibitions
Every March, Fairbanks Arts hosts Up With Art, the annual FNSBSD student art exhibition during National Youth Art Month. The exhibition features hundreds of artworks by K-12 grade student artists in the Bear Gallery. The AEC will:
- Update the call for art
- Assist with program publicity and communication to engage FNSBSD student participation
- Coordinate exhibition judges
- Coordinate exhibition prizes for students
- Assist the Fairbanks Arts Visual Arts Coordinator, as appropriate, to support a successful Up With Art exhibition
Annually, Fairbanks Arts facilitates the Mayor’s Student Art Show in the Fairbanks North Star Borough administrative building. The AEC will
- Coordinate all exhibition logistics with the Mayor’s office
- Coordinate selection and preparation of student artwork
- Coordinate with appropriate Fairbanks Arts staff to install and deinstall the exhibition.
